Bob Marley & the Wailers’ classic Exodus album, the ninth studio album of the band, was released on June 3, 1977, featuring a new backing band including brothers Carlton and Aston “Family Man” Barrett on drums and bass, Tyrone Downie on keyboards, Alvin “Seeco” Patterson on percussion, and the I Threes, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths and Rita Marley on backing vocals, and newest member Julian “Junior Marvin” on guitar. The album was released on June 3, 1977, just six months after an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley’s life in Jamaica in December, forcing him to flee to London, where Exodus was recorded.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebration, Ziggy Marley has intimately revisited the original session recordings, uncovering unused and never-before-heard vocals, lyric phrasing and instrumentation, incorporating and transforming these various elements into brand-new session takes.
This June, The Marley Family, Island Records and UMe will mark the 40th anniversary of Exodus – named the “Best Album of the 20th Century” by Time magazine in 1999 – with a series of four separate reissues, three of which will feature Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues, son Ziggy’s newly curated “restatement” of the original album.
On June 2, UMe will release a version of Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues in a two-CD package that includes the original album and the Ziggy Marley “restatement”; a three-CD set (and digital equivalent) that includes the original Exodus, Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues and Exodus Live. A limited edition gold vinyl version of the original 1977 album will also be available.
A Super Deluxe, four-LP, two-7” single vinyl version includes the original LP, Ziggy’s restatement Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues, an Exodus Live set recorded at London’s Rainbow Theatre the week of the album’s release, Punky Reggae Party LP which includes a previously unreleased extended mix of “Keep On Moving”, and a pair of vinyl 7” singles, including “Waiting in Vain” b/w “Roots” and “Smile Jamaica (Part One)” b/w “Smile Jamaica (Part Two).” In celebration of the Exodus 40th Anniversary, fans who pre-order the Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues Super Deluxe edition via ShopMarley.com will receive a digital download of the entire package as well as an exclusive Stephen Marley ‘juggling’ of the song “Exodus” with a reimagined music bed and different lead vocalists including Beenie Man, Queen Ifrica, Tarrus Riley and more to be announced, on June 2nd in advance of the June 30th physical release date. Following Jamaican music customs of taking a music track (known as the ‘riddim’ or ‘juggling’) and have several artists record original songs with original lyric and melody on that track, Stephen Marley has recorded a ‘Re Likk’ EP of the “Exodus” riddim that will be available exclusively in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Ziggy approached the “restatement” project with the utmost respect for his father’s music and the message. Exodus 40 – The Movement Continues is his vision of how his father might have accessed these songs today. Ziggy’s respectful, but experimental approach places them in a brand-new context, like listening to this classic album again, for the first time.
Ziggy uncovered 10 lead vocal outtakes for “One Love”, proceeding to piece together a dazzling, new lead vocal from the outtakes, which includes vocal booth lyric ad libs near the end of the song. He also assembled a noteworthy roster of musicians to record a new music bed for “Turn Your Lights Down Low” – which leads the song into deeper elements of R&B. Bob’s original vocals sit atop this fresh music bed, creating a new soulful experience with this iconic song. Ziggy and his hand-chosen musicians provide subtle instrumental textures throughout this knowledgeable reimagining from the multiple Grammy® winning heir to his father’s legacy.

This past Friday, Ziggy received the 2017 George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement at UCLA’s Spring Sing. Held at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, the Student Alumni Association and UCLA Alumni Association named Marley this year’s recipient, making Ziggy the first reggae artist to receive this award in its 29-year history.
This annual achievement award is named after George and Ira Gershwin, who adapted the UCLA Bruin fight song “Strike Up the Band for UCLA” in 1936. This award was established in 1988 and since then, some of the recipients have included: Pete Townshend & Roger Daltrey of The Who, Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alanis Morissette, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, to name a few.

Ziggy and crew start off the weekend in Westhampton Beach, NY with yet another sold out show at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center! With the help of a killer photo by IG @antonio_bottero we see Abraham & young Isaiah – deemed the band’s new “tour manager” – jamming along to “Exodus”, a song they’ve been performing in celebration of the album 40th anniversary.
Capping off the weekend in Massachusetts, Ziggy & band co-headline the Levitate Music Festival.

As July comes to a close, Ziggy wraps up with shows across the Northeast and into Quebec. In case you haven’t been keeping up with us on social media, we’ve put together a recap for you! Here is episode 3 of our #TourTuneIn blog series. You can check out some of the highlights from the past couple of weeks through fan photos, live videos, and exciting moments. After this, we’ll be taking a couple of weeks off, and then doing one last blog post following a U.K. weekend festival run in mid August. Until then….
We start this third leg of the journey with Ziggy playing two back-to-back sold out concerts at The Chicken Box in Nantucket. One fan named Marley was especially excited to get a picture with Ziggy before the show!
Ziggy brings down the house at the Alive@5 Concert Series in Samford, Connecticut. Photographer Steven Soyland captures an awesome action shot during the show.
Two fans show their love for Ziggy as they jam out during his Fredricksburg concert. Another fan captures a video of “Tomorrow People”. According to Ziggy this was one his favorite sets of the leg.
Before heading out for his set at the Reggae In The Park festival in Philly, Ziggy snaps a selfie with kids Gideon and Abraham. Due to weather & technical difficulties the event was running behind, and Ziggy ended up going on late, but those who stuck around were in for a real treat of a night!
Ziggy is all smiles in New Jersey as he performs at the Wellmont Theater in New Jersey. After the show, some fans stuck around and hung at at the tour bus to see Ziggy and get their picture taken with him. We love meeting our fans whenever we can!
Ziggy rocks it at Artpark Amphitheater in upstate New York. The show was very well received by local press (see below), and we had equally as much fun!
Fans capture photos and videos of Ziggy on the colorful stage one of the coolest venues we’ve ever come across, The (legendary) Egg, in Albany.
A last minute add-on to our initial tour schedule, this sold out show in Vermont was hosted in partnership with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream (headquartered in Burlington). The event was in celebration of the new Bob Marley #OneLove ice cream flavor, the proceeds from which wholly fund our One Love Youth Camp project in Jamaica! For the final show of the tour, Ziggy heads back up to Canada for his set at La Fête du Lac des Nations. Before the show he posts a selfie reflecting on his time on the road, the experiences he had and the lessons learned. After getting home, he posts a funny series of videos of the kids on stage for one final performance of “Exodus”.

Ziggy Marley has just released the second single, “Circle Of Peace”, from his upcoming album, Rebellion Rises!
The song brings a different musical approach to a familiar theme in Ziggy’s mission to bring about peace through individuals changing their perspectives while simultaneously getting involved to help their communities and the struggle for a better tomorrow. Within the song’s chorus he professes, “Only the willing will see their dreams,” a motto that’s followed him since The Marley Brothers trip to South Africa during the 2010 World Cup—amid difficulties trying to put together a free concert for the people of Soweto, the motto of the journey became, “Only the willing!”
The track also features Ziggy’s brother and long-time musical collaborator Stephen Marley, who lends some hip-hop vocals to the tune.
